The Law of Filler for Beauty and Facial Care According to the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)

The world of beauty is never separated from a woman, its development is increasingly rapid. To be beautiful is getting easier. Have you ever heard the word filler?

Filler as a result of the development of medical technology for beauty and care is widely practiced by the public with a variety of purposes, materials used and the impact caused.

According to MUI, Filler is a beauty treatment performed by injecting synthetic or natural substances into lines, folds and facial tissues to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and to restore facial vitality that decreases with age.

According to PERDOSKI (Association of Indonesian Dermatologists and Surgeons), the benefits of fillers include skin effects due to aging (wrinkles and sags), post-acne hypertrophic scarring, post-varisela or post-traumatic surgery/accident, improving asymmetrical skin contours on the lips, chin, and cheeks.

What are the legal provisions of fillers according to MUI?

Based on the Fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Number 41 of 2020:

  1. Fillers that are used to change the creation of Allah SWT such as turning up the nose, tapering the chin, smoothing the face, thinning or thickening the lips, and/or for purposes that are prohibited by shar’i, are haram.
  2. Fillers used for beauty and treatment such as smoothing facial wrinkles, disguising acne or chickenpox scars, filling in hollows under the eye area, or to disguise disgrace on the face and/or repair it, are permissible under the following conditions: does not contradict the objectives of Shari’ah; using halal and pure ingredients; not harmful to oneself, others, and/or the environment; and performed by competent and trustworthy experts.
  3. Fillers that result in harm (dlarar), deception (tadlis), dependence (idman), or things that are forbidden, are haram.
