Check Out The Ruling On Using Blood Plasma For Medicine!
Assalamu’alaikum Sobat Halal-Mu
As we all know, the development of science is so fast, medicines that are developing in society today also come from various materials.
Currently circulating drugs whose raw materials are derived from blood plasma and therefore raise questions from the public about the status and law of their use.
What is blood plasma?
Blood plasma is a yellowish liquid that carries blood cells and plays a role in carrying various essential nutrients that support the body’s health.
Blood plasma is the yellow liquid component of blood, in which blood cells, nutrients and hormones float. Blood plasma is separated from blood through a process of centrifugation (high-speed spinning) of fresh blood samples, where blood cells settle at the bottom because they are heavier, while blood plasma is in the upper layer. Plasma is an element of blood, and a separate part of blood whose properties; color, smell and taste are different from blood.
Blood plasma has various functions for the body, one of which is to maintain body temperature and help fight infection.
Blood is a type of connective tissue that has cells suspended (not separated) in an intra-cellular fluid, functioning for transportation, protection, and regulation. Blood consists of two main components: fluid (plasma) and blood cells.
Then what is the law if blood plasma is used for medicinal purposes?
The word of Allah SWT in Surah Al-An’am (6): 145 “I did not find in the revelation revealed to me anything that is forbidden to those who wish to eat it, unless it be carrion, or flowing blood, or pork, for indeed all of these are filthy, or animals slaughtered in the name of other than Allah. But whoever is in a state of necessity, and does not desire it, nor does he transgress the limits, then surely your Lord is Forgiving, and Merciful.”
In the Fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Number 45 of 2018 concerning the use of blood plasma for medicine states that:
- Basically, blood is unclean, therefore it is forbidden to be used as an ingredient in medicine and other products.
- Blood plasma is pure and may be utilized under the following conditions:
- Only for medicinal purposes;
- Not derived from human blood;
- Derived from halal animal blood.
Hope this is useful.
