Why Should Ice Cream Be Halal?

Based on the National Standardization Agency of the Republic of Indonesia Number 6 of 2019, what is meant by Ice Cream is a type of semi-solid food made by freezing ice cream flour or from a mixture of milk, animal and vegetable fats, sugar with or without other food ingredients and permitted food ingredients.
Because of its deliciousness, many people from children to adults love ice cream. However, there is something that must be considered before buying ice cream, namely the halalness of the ice cream.
Why Ice Cream Must be Halal?
- Consumption of halal food is part of the teachings of Islam which emphasizes the importance of obeying the rules of permitted food (found in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 168). “O people! Eat of the lawful and good things found on earth,and follow not the steps of the devil.”
- The mandate of Law Number 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Assurance, which states that “Every product that enters, circulates and is traded in the territory of Indonesia must have a halal certificate.”
- Many of the ingredients used in ice cream, such as gelatin, milk, and flavorings, can come from non-halal sources. Especially if the ice cream manufacturer comes from abroad, which does not include halal considerations in its production process.
Therefore, it is important to ensure that all ingredients used in the ice cream meet halal standards so that it can be consumed by Muslims without hesitation. In addition, the halal label also provides assurance for consumers about the quality and safety of the product.
