Maggot Cosmetics: Halal or Not? Here’s the Explanation!

Assalamu’alaikum Sobat Halal-Mu

Cosmetics made from maggot aka Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) are starting to be widely used in the beauty industry. It is said that these larvae are rich in protein and nutrients that are beneficial for the skin. But, a big question arises: is it halal or not?

As Muslims who care about the halalness of the products we use, it is important for us to understand how maggots are used in cosmetics as well as their legal status according to Islam.

How are Maggots Used in Cosmetics?

Maggot contains high protein, essential fatty acids, and bioactive substances that can help moisturize the skin, improve elasticity, and enhance overall skin health. The process of using them in cosmetics involves several steps, such as:

  1. Cultivation of the larvae in a controlled environment.
  2. Extraction of bioactive ingredients, such as larval oil and protein hydrolysates.
  3. Processing and blending with other cosmetic ingredients, such as moisturizers and serums.

MUI Fatwa: The Halal Status of Maggot in Cosmetics

According to MUI Fatwa No. 24/2019, black soldier fly larvae are categorized as hasyarat (small insects), and consuming them is haram. However, MUI allows the cultivation of these larvae for non-consumption purposes, such as animal feed or other benefits.

From a cosmetic perspective, its halal status depends on:

Source of maggot feed → If maggots are cultivated using halal ingredients such as fruit and vegetable scraps, the status is safer.

Contamination with unclean ingredients → If the larvae feed on unclean waste such as pork or alcohol, it may become unclean.

Conclusion: Halal or Not?

In general, maggot-based cosmetics can be potentially halal if:

  1. The larvae are cultivated with halal ingredients.
  2. The extraction and processing process is free from contamination of unclean materials.
  3. The product has obtained halal certification from the Halal Examination Institute (LPH) and MUI.

However, since the MUI fatwa states that these larvae are haram for consumption, it is important to ensure that the ingredients used in these cosmetics do not fall into categories that are against Islamic law.

What to do?

Always check the halal label on cosmetic products before buying.

Find out the raw materials of the product by reading the information on the packaging or the brand’s official website.

If in doubt, consult with LPH or MUI regarding the halal status of the product.

So, what do you think? Do you agree that cosmetics made from maggot should get halal certification first?
