Founder of Almaz Fried Chicken: Halal Certification Should Be Easier and More Affordable
The long and costly process of obtaining halal certification remains one of the biggest challenges for business owners, particularly in the culinary sector. Okta Wirawan, the founder of Almaz Fried Chicken, recently shared his experience, revealing the harsh reality behind the process. According to him, what should be a straightforward and transparent certification process has instead been hindered by unreasonable fees and inflated costs.
Okta recounted how he had to spend hundreds of millions of rupiah to obtain halal certification, even though the official fees should have been significantly lower. “During the six-month-long halal certification process for Almaz Fried Chicken, which seemed never-ending, we were charged hundreds of millions of rupiah. Some individuals even set fees per outlet branch and per employee, which, when totaled, could reach billions!” he wrote on his personal Instagram account. This situation is undoubtedly burdensome for business owners, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) trying to grow. In reality, halal certification is a crucial step in ensuring that products comply with Islamic law and meet the quality standards expected by consumers.
However, many business owners face challenges due to non-transparent costs and a convoluted process. This issue needs to be addressed promptly to allow Indonesia’s halal industry to flourish without being weighed down by unnecessary expenses.
Why Should Halal Certification Be Easy and Affordable?
Halal certification is not just a label for consumers to know that the products they consume comply with Islamic law. More importantly, it is a way to build consumer trust in the products being sold. This process should not be an excessive burden but rather an essential step toward expanding market opportunities.
With the increasing awareness of halal products among consumers, the halal certification process should not become a barrier to business growth. Therefore, the certification process must be simplified and made more accessible. The Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) and Halal Inspection Bodies (LPH) need to collaborate to create a system that is more efficient, affordable, and transparent so that business owners can apply for halal certification without worrying about unreasonable fees.
