Using Halal Animal Placenta for Medicine. What is the ruling?
Assalamu’alaikum Sobat Halal-Mu
You already know that animal placenta can be used as an ingredient for making medicine, you know! But what is the law on using halal animal placenta for medicine according to the Indonesian Ulema Council? Let’s see!
The word of Allah SWT:
“And He has created livestock for you; in them are (fur) warming and various benefits, and some of them you eat” Q.S. al-Nahl [16]: 5
“He is Allah who made for you all that is in the earth…” Q.S. al-Baqarah [2]: 29.
Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad:
“What is lawful is clear and what is unlawful is also clear; and in between there are things that are musyta-bihat (doubtful, vague, unclear about what is lawful and unlawful), most people do not know the ruling. Whoever is careful of the doubtful matters has indeed saved his religion and his dignity…” (narrated by Muslim from Nu’man bin Bashir).
- Placenta or tembuni or ari-ari is an organ formed during pregnancy / gestation that connects the fetus to the mother’s uterine wall through blood vessels to obtain nutrients, remove metabolic waste and gas exchange.
- Masyimah is of two types: First, which is cut from the fetus, is part of the fetus. Second, the place where the fetus is located, is not part of the mother nor is it part of the fetus.
- Animal carcasses are animals that died without being slaughtered or that were slaughtered in a way that is not in accordance with shar’i regulations.
Legal provisions
- It is permissible to use the placenta of a halal animal (ma’kul al-lahm) that has been slaughtered according to sharee’ah for consumptive purposes.
- The use of placenta from halal animals (ma’kul al-lahm), which is not part of the mother nor part of the fetus for medicinal purposes, is permissible as long as it does not cause harm.
- The use of the placenta derived from the carcass of a halal animal, including those that are not slaughtered in a shar’i manner, for medicinal purposes is haraam.
Hope this is useful.
